In 1828 Macon County NC was formed from the western part of Haywood County. In 1839 the western part of Macon County became Cherokee County. In 1851 the eastern part of Macon County and the western part of Haywood County were combined to form Jackson County.

Congress created the National Park in 1934 and for many years bought land in both Tennessee and North Carolina. Many families were dislocated.
